Coping With the Paradox of Online Dating

A lot of people say that online dating is a good thing as it lets them choose their potential partners from a relatively wider range. But with this option of variety comes a more subtle hassle - how do you pick the best one of the lot when there are so many people to choose from? There is this constant voice in your head which tells you that if you browse a little longer, you might find someone better than the one on the current page. This, here, is what we call the paradox of online dating. When there is more to choose from, dating becomes even tougher.

So how does one cope with this dilemma? Going back to dating in the conventional sense obviously is not an option as online dating was a replacement for that in the first place. The best advice one can give in such a case is to roll with the punches. We need to identify the main reasons of wanting to date online - are you looking for a long-term relationship? Do you just want to hook up with someone for the night? Do you want to hook up with someone on a regular basis and yet keep it casual? Knowing what you want is very important. Only then can you define the criteria of approaching the online dating populace.

Whatever be your reason for wanting to date online, remember one simple rule - everyone has a past, which includes you as well. If you are looking for a lasting relationship, honesty is one of the key factors. However, you need to know how to pace the flow of information. What we mean is, no one likes to know about how you felt when your second grade teacher scolded you, on the first date. If you have some personal things that you would want to share with your partner, do it only when you both trust each other. For those who are venturing out into the online dating world only for a short fling, these things do not matter so much.

Having said that, it does seem to be a good idea to do at least some sort of background check on a potential partner you meet online. With the extensive prowess of the social media in today's age, it doesn't take much time or effort to look into some details of an unknown person before you actually meet up. Once you have all such areas covered, you can confidently stride out there in the virtual world and start looking up your options.
