Meeting your boyfriend's parents for the first time can be quite nerve racking. Surely you will be spending a lot of time getting your hair, make-up and clothes ready. You want to make sure you make the best impression possible. The way you present yourself plays a big part in the impression you make to the people who may be your future in-laws. Before meeting his parents, you need to take some time to decide which clothes are going to let them see the real you in the best light possible. Below are a few guidelines that will help you decide what to wear.
Dress Modestly: This is probably the most important piece of advise about how to dress when meeting your boyfriend's parents. Even if your boyfriend is not the conservative type and he says his parents aren't either, you still want to dress appropriately. Even if he says it doesn't matter how you dress, they will love you anyway, don't listen to him, it does matter. Skirts should be below the knee, blouses should cover the chest, preferably up to the collar bone, and sleeves should reach the elbows. Clothes shouldn't be tight, but they shouldn't be loose either. The image you want to portray is "wife/mother/good girl." So rather than the animal print cardigan with the tight black skirt and stilleto heels that you had in mind, opt for something like a solid colored cardigan sweater, like pink, blue or purple, a knee length skirt, and black flats. If you don't have clothes that are appropriate for meeting his parents, now is a good time to do some shopping. Choose items that you'll appreciate having in your closet for other occasions, like simple black skirts, black dresses and all different colors of cardigans. These types of things will always come in handy. You don't have to go to expensive name brand stores to get these things. Try retailers that sell wholesale clothes.
Dress up a little: Dressing modestly also means dressing feminine. If you're a jeans and sneakers kind of gal, then you'll have to forgo them for just this one day. There are some girls that absolutely hate dressing up (I don't understand this, but they do exist). If this is you, perhaps you can borrow some dressy clothes from a friend, or follow the above suggestion and look into wholesale clothing options. Either way, you will have to dress up a little. This doesn't mean wearing a prom dress. It means putting on a skirt, a nice top (meaning not a t-shirt), actually washing your hair, and putting on some make up - this includes mascara, eyeshadow, lipstick and blush.
Be Yourself: Even if you dress perfectly, but you don't feel comfortable, then you won't enjoy yourself, and your mood will rub off on the people you're with. You should only wear clothes that make you feel comfortable, and you feel confident while wearing them.
